notary public D. Salvador Dalí y Cusí, father of the famous surrealistic painter Salvador Dali,
who spent his youth in Figueras and went to school there with the
Maristen brothers.

Doel van de maatschappij was het drukken en uitgeven van boekwerken en geschriften, waarvan de inhoud niet in strijd is met de R.K. geloofs- en zedenleer, bij voorkeur van apologetische strekking, het exploiteren van een drukkerij en het verrichten van alles wat tot het grafische vak behoort.
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) werd als schrijver en dichter uit
Florence
vooral beroemd door zijn meesterwerk, de Divina Comedia (Goddelijke
Comedie),
een beschrijving van zijn reis door de onderwereld (hel en vagevuur) en
de hemelsche sferen (ENSIE, II, p.
144-145).

Dudok, W.M. (1884-1974)
Stadsbouwmeester van Hilversum. City architect of the Dutch city of
Hilversum.
Some city loans show a vignette of the townhall designed by Dudok. See picture. He was the city
architect of Hilversum. This townhall is considered to be his magnum
opus: he designed all aspects of the building, including the garden,
furniture, carpeting, light works, clocks and even the major's
chairman's hammer. Other buildings of his hand (outside Hilversum) were
the "oude Bijenkorf" in Rotterdam, the Hoogoven main offices in Velsen
and the Pavillon Néerlandais in the Cité
Universitaire in Paris.

Menelik II, emperor

established in 1896; Action de 500 Francs,

military painter and illustrator Louis Charles Bombled (1862-1927) of
the Ethiopian emperor Menelik II awaiting an oncoming train
on his horse, accompanied by merchants with camels. Imprimerie Chaise,

The Swiss engineer Alfred Ilg, minister under emperor Menelik II,
convinced him to build this railway from the coast inland bound, ca. 78
km. over mountans 2.424 m. high. It was a small size track from
Djibouti, along Harare, Antotto and Kaffa to the White Nile and Addis
Abeba. The money was raised in France that had a strategic interest in
the area after the Abessinian war with Italy. The track was completed
in 1917, one year aftter the death of Alfred

Established in 1891 with his father Gerard in Eindhoven (The
Netherlands) the now famous multinational electronics firm, known (in
short) as Philips.
In his name there are shares of the Algemeene Verzekering Maatschappij

Sarphati, Samuel (1813 - 1866)
Huisarts in Amsterdam met veel arme patiënten. Door de vele
ellende die hij meemaakte kreeg hij een sterke dadendrang om de
omstandigheden van de bevolking en de economie van het land te
verbeteren. Daarom werd hij - naast zijn praktijk - tevens een
initiatiefrijk entrepreneur in de publieke sector. Van diverse door hen
opgerichte bedrijven, zijn oude effecten bewaard gebleven, soms met
zijn handtekening. Zie hiervoor de uitgebreide

Na zijn dood eerde Amsterdam hem door herbenoeming van straten als de
Sarphatistraat en de Sarphatikade. In 1866 werd het Sarphatipark
geopend, waarin een monument werd geplaatst met zijn beeltenis.
Scholten, Willem Albert (1819-1892)
's Werelds eerste landbouwindustrieel, oprichter van 24 fabrieken,
waarvan 10 in Oost Europa en daarmee Nederlands eerste moderne
multinational: het Scholten concern. Tevens mede-directeur en
groot-aandeelhouder van de Nederlandsch-Amerikaanse
Stoomvaart-Maatschappij (de latere Holland-Amerika Lijn).
Scholten, Jan Evert (1849-1918),
die meestal Johan werd genoemd, was Willem Albert's enige zoon. Hij
heeft door zijn vele zakelijke, culturele en architectonische
initiatieven een groot stempel gedrukt op de stad en de provincie
Groningen. Zijn handtekening wordt op aandelen van diverse
ondernemingen gevonden.
Zwolsman, Reinder (1912-1988)
Roemrucht zakenman en onroerend goed ontwikkelaar, die o.a. grote publiekeksbekendheid kreeg door uitgifte van aandelen E.M.S.- Exploitatiemaatschappij Scheveningen (die o.a. de Scheveningse Pier herbouwde en eigenaar was van het Kurhaus Hotel).
