About Rubber, Hevea, Caoutchouc and Guttapercha:
Most rubber plants come originally from South America, especially Brasil, the most important one being the Hevea Brasiliensis.
When Brasil could no more accomodate demand in the beginning of the 20th century, because of demand for rubber tyres for cars and bicycles, plantations were established of Hevea Brasiliensis, at first in Malacca and shortly after in Dutch east Indies (now Indonesia); later also in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) , Thailand, Vietnam and Africa: there especially in Zaire, Liberia and to some extend Nigeria.
Natural rubber is also called Caoutchouc: in Indian language: caa= tears ochu = wood
Latex = the name of the fluid tapped from the trees
Goodyear (1800-1860) discovered the vulcanisation process in 1839 to improve the caoutchouc with Sulphur (Zwavel = S).
The rubber air tire was discovered in 1845 by Thompson.
Synthetic rubber came into use during the 2nd world war, when rubber from Asia became less available.
Guttapercha is a product that is won in a similar manner as natural rubber, but from the Palaquium tree, especially the Palaquium Gutta, originating in Maleisia and Indonesia. One of the most important uses was the isolation of cabels such as the first Trans Atlantic cables.
